Window boxes
What do you think of window boxes? In most cases they're left derelict and forlorn -nude of any planting. In some cases I've seen them planted with horrible plastic flowers! However in Quebec City I came across these delightful planters full of creeping red (live) flowers -aren't these charming? Just something to remind us all that spring is on the way!

In central european cities like Strasbourg, red flowers are everywhere. Either in a concrete container that is part of the front wall (as in your photo) or hanging from the front wall in a metal basket. In either case, the flowers look fantastic. They are tended regularly by the local council.
I associate red geraniums with France and London. On the Riviera and parts of Italy it seems to be the cyclamen that replaces the geraniums in winter. Would that it were so here in Atlanta but pansies rule.
I love window boxes and think they can make such an I pact. I filled mine with red Idragon winged begonias and sweet potatoe vine last summer and LOVED it. I swore I would to the same this summer, but this picture makes me think I should toss the potato vine and stick just the red. I shared a picture of the window boxes (along with some exterior before and afters) here: http://inspiredlivinghome.blogspot.com/2013/09/exterior-updates.html
Window boxes are everywhere in central London, always immaculate with their pansies, boxwood, impatiens etc. Also, lots of places have hanging baskets as an additional way of adding color to the streets of London. I don't see it as much here in San Francisco though (too bad, if you ask me!).
