
The best time to visit the national mall here in DC is in the evening. The lighting is fantastic; like in so many things, the lighting makes all the difference.

Night brings a quietness to the surroundings without noisy tour groups and lots of talking: it's like church.

What better way to reflect on our different heros, wars and ARCHITECTURE.

The lighting brings out the form. Brightly lit white marble or limestone against the deep purple sky. If you can't make it here, enjoy the pictures!

Agree 100%. I think there are services that offer night tours of the monuments.
PD, yes, they're open to the public in the evenings as well as the daytime. Whenever I have guests in town thats when I take them down to see them, forget the daytime; they're not nearly as impressive! They also make for better photos!
My favorite time is the morning after a good snow fall. So peaceful.
