Oh Dear

If you have a spare $250,000 laying around -you could buy this....ahem....'castle' in Kansas....on ebay HERE...... ya - i'm scared - i wish there were interior pictures!!! Be afraid....be very afraid, and yes, this is for REAL! Someone built this! I think they got the architect's plans mixed up with their kindergardener's drawings. It's not all pretty around here at architect design....

That is one "damsel in distress"!! What were they thinking....In SoCal we have more than our share of ugly mcmansions but this takes the prize. Ginny

My eyes! My Eyes! I've been blinded! I think this is what happens when a memeber of the SCA builds a house. A little research would have gone a long way in fixing this. I see a achitectural fashion sitation in their future. it ranks pretty close to these peoples attempt to recreate the Munster house.

Gawd... that's hideous! Some of the castles I saw that were hundreds of years old and in ruins are better looking than this one! YUCK!

A little ivy would do wonders. Honestly it is a horror but once I saw the post my mind instantly began percolating on how to improve the building (sort of like Professor Higgins and Eliza Doolittle). Ivy, of course, would be brilliant. But why not just go whole-hog and create a parterre in front with topiary spheres and obelisks? The windows are unfortunate, not to mention unfortunately deployed in the façade, but surely one could camouflage or redesign them. We should make this a group project—how to make it better.

Of course, you're completely right, AAL. I'm of the opinion that you can make anything nice. I think landscaping would certainly help this place. It looks like a duck out of water in all that plain grass. Also - it has a drawbridge -so a moat would probably help -along with the creepy crawlies like you mentioned (ivy) and maybe some water lilies and potted topiaries. does it deserve some flags or is that too literal?

yikes!

I think flags would be too literal, but why not top the towers with slightly rounded or peaked caps, so it wouldn't look quite so forbidding? And frankly, why NOT excavate and create a lovely moat (not huge, maybe 15 feet wide?) whose banks are planted with clumps of irises and other water-loving plants?

I like the idea of capping the towers, AAL. Also - iris's are among my favorite flowers -can't go wrong with that! I think you could possibly leave the windows where they are but replace them with some beautiful leaded glass casements.

and a moat.
