One of my favorite artists is John Currin. He also is also a co-alumni of mine from Carnegie Mellon Univ. in Pittsburgh! He graduated in 1984 though - a few years before me- Go CMU!!!! He is a postmodernist where he uses past styles to satirically depict current, exaggerated notions of female beauty. That is what he is most well-known for -however of course like many artists he is well rounded and has painted many subjects as well -all dealing with portraiture. This last painting of his has always intrigued me because it looks EXACTLY like my mom right before I was born!! even the hairstyle!

Sow us the photo of Mom.
Admire his work and wit.
I'll have to find one when I'm home for mother's day next weekend :-) The likeness to that painting is uncanny!
The photo of his son - that is hysterical - the proud father! he looks like Russell Crowe, sort of, no?
He does look a lot like russell crowe, CdT! So proud of his son and his son's 'equipment' - sort of bizarre
Very cool - dark but with some sense of humour.
It doesn't look normal, whats going on with his son in the picture. But the way the photo shows his son in full and cuts him off, John Currin, its as though part of the intention of the photo is to make you wonder if his son received these attributes from his father.
exactly emily, I think thats what I like about it!
His work to me is sorta comical-looking! I like it a lot, it's neat to look at!
Hi there, I stumbled on your blog whilst searching up on John Currin and love it ! bravo. I checked out all the sites you listed and they are great also, thank you. I am currently living in Sao Paulo, Brazil after 30 yrs in Paris and am about to relocate to Shaoxing, China and travel back and forth to Sri Lanka so I really need to see things like this to keep my moral up in the air. I love interior design and I am a fashion designer with my own label but the lack of base camp is really destablising. Thank GOD for BLOGS ! keep up the good work and thank you again, best wishes Stephanie Murray
Good luck with your move, Stephanie! Sounds like you've had a fascinating life so far -would love to hear more about it!
