HERE) just got back from a trip to Italy and France. He sent me these photos of woodwork details from Versailles.
I love these elegant blue-gray and white painted panels. The workmanship is exquisite!! However, as much as I like these elegant versions above-these polychrome panels below are TO DIE FOR. How crazy beautiful are these?
Just thought I'd share - thanks for the photos, Henry! Oh, did I mention he also went to Villa Rotunda that I blogged about last month?? I'm green with envy!

Versailles is simply (well grandly, actually) mind-blowing in every respect and these pictures you've posted demonstrate that. It's just so massive, it's almost difficult to comprehend. The only pity is that there is very little furniture in it, as it was "dispersed" after the Revolution. That's the great thing about castles and palaces and grand houses in Britain - they're full of stunning furniture...some of it maybe from Versailles too!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I did a kitchen for a client recently and copied a flooring design from Versailles. Now, of course, I want it for myself.
ReplyDeleteWhen I lived in Paris, it was compulsory to visit the Versailles a few times. I, personally, don't think one day would be enough to take in the lavish-ness of this place. I have to say that Marie Antoinette's room was the most lavishly decorated, breathtaking room, I have ever seen. It's by far more beautiful up close and imagine one of my favourite past times is visiting stately homes here or abroad.
ReplyDeleteWell, one of these days I'll get to Versailles and see it all myself! I already have about 4 books on Versailles and probably watch 'Marie Antointte' that was filmed there about once a month!! I just love detail shots like these!
ReplyDeleteYears ago I went to Paris with my mother and going to Versailles was the highlight for me. So breathtaking. These photos are beautiful.

ReplyDeleteI am a bit ashamed to admit that I went to Paris this summer (for the first time) and did not make the trek to Versailles. I only had three days, so I made the decision to skip Versailles this time.
ReplyDeleteI love architectural details so much, so seeing these photos makes me regret my decision...oh well, I always like to leave a few things unseen so that I can see them the next time I visit!
TTI, I'm embaressed to admit I've never even been to Paris! LOL Someday soon -and i'll definitely trek out to Versailles! These photos made my day too, Anon, thats why I had to share them!

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these photos. It gave me the idea to share some of my photos taken of the Versailles when my partner and I visited. I've always wondered why I took pictures of these historical places knowing that I am not the type of person that would put them in an album or frame for the home. You gave me a reason to scrape up all those travel photos in the basement and start sharing them with people like yourself that just may appreciate them. Thanks again and keep up the great blog...I enjoy visiting.
