This past weekend I attended a few interesting estate sales and picked up a lot of 'treasure'! One pair of items though remains somewhat of a mystery to me and thought maybe someone would have some background. This unusual pair of macabre tree trunk vases appear to be quite old , perhaps Victorian period? Google searches turned up nothing other than a few Belleek vases but they did not have the unusual root 'legs'. Has anyone seen a vase like this before?

PVE - the vases have many small little holes -i thought it would look great with ferns or other wild flowers!

ReplyDeleteI cannot tell you anything about these, but I sure envy you your find. The overall effect reminds me somewhat of certain hand vases--the odd ones where the splayed fingers rest on the table, and the upright wrist hold the flowers.

Parnassus - they are similar! The sort of thing you'd expect to see crawling away from you on the table.

ReplyDeleteThanks Mark! The chair caught my eye on the first day but I wanted until the final hours of the sale to go back and purchase....it wouldn't go out of my mind. My apartment is becoming "stefan's haven for wayward chairs"!

I have seen 18th c pieces with many small holes used for tulips...Dutch idea. Also, in ENgland I've seen a pair of multi-hole vases on a mantle piece... I can't remember where and yes, they were full of ferns and airy flowers... had a weedy look. I don't recall seeing the root feature though. There is also something a little Tony Duquette about them. I think they would be fab with japanese maple in them!!

Thanks Nancy - I've had the leaf shaped Meissen butter pats for awhile and they just seemed like the perfect pairing!
