Italian design in DC

As many of you know by now, I am not a modernist.  However I do appreciate the clean lines of many modern products. Last week I attended an event at the Boffi / Maxalto showroom and thought I'd share some of my favorite pieces with you.
I loved the LED lit console seen at the top of the page, even if it felt a bit commercial. The soaking tub above was pretty great too.
The egg shaped tub was probably my favorite, it looks so comfortable! I could see it in a more traditional bathroom with a different faucet.
The furnishings from Maxalto were more my speed especially the sectional above in this great maroon velvet; great for stretching out on movie nights.
Probably my favorite item on view though was an installation of these paper butterflies by artist Paul Villinski which fluttered as one walked by. What do you think, would you install any of these modern fixtures in your house?

  1. Yes, as time has gone by - there is something simple about modern. I respect and admire the mix of antiques with modern. My dream would be to have a barn, renovated very modern inside. I love the dichotomy. Modern allows more room to breathe and less clutter. Everything you need and nothing more.

  2. Picturing the butterflies fluttering and their shadows moving - just terrific! BTW, I finally visited Jonathan Adler in Georgetown today. Cool shop. Remember reading about it first on your blog!!

  3. PVE -you are so right! The eye has to travel as DV said.

Loi - we should have had lunch! Let me know next time you're down in Georgetown.

  4. I love these tubs. I despise bathing in tubs, bending over the scrub them. I need a faux tub I guess or a trompe-l'œil tub.

  5. One of my absolute bucket list items is an ancient marble tub with lion feet... sort of shaped like this but well, not the same thing. I think I am with you on modern. I like looking at it from time to time but couldn't live with it!!!

    Yes... maroon velvet works!

  7. so good to see your post on this. I wanted to attend but couldn't. Those tubs are gorgeous. I'm always torn by classic curvy and these clean beauties.

  8. Good on the hotel for so well preserving the American Classical detail of the public spaces---other conversions could take lessons. Handsome.
