Canaletto at NGA
Have weekend plans here in DC? Why not stop by the National Gallery of Art to see the current show entitled Venice: Canaletto and his rivals. Canaletto seems to be in the air here in DC, with numerous galleries and antique shops throughout Georgetown showcasing paintings in similar style. At the entrance to the exhibit is an original 19th century gondola that was purchased by the artist Thomas Moran and brought to his house on Long Island. The timing seems ideal as I'm currently obsessed with the Venetian fantasy that is Vizcaya. You'll find me at NGA on Saturday!
I will have to check and see if there is anything as remotely interesting in Chicago! There has to be!

Stefan, a while back I read an interesting article on Canaletto that said that his views are so precise that today's Venetian authorities regularly check his work to see how far water has risen in the city.
ReplyDeleteI grew up with that exact print.
ReplyDeleteso his name is very familiar to me.
SomI never rode in one like that, gorgeous..how romantic.

That will be a nice way to spend the weekend. Interesting to see the gondolier that is original and probably featured in some of the artwork you will see.
ReplyDeleteHow long is the exhibit? I hope I can make it.
ReplyDeleteKerry, end of may. You have awhile.
