I just spent an exciting weekend visiting friends in New York. One of my favorite things about the city during the holidays are the window displays. My favorite this year are probably the windows done by the amazing Simon Doonan at Barneys (which just happens to be one of my favorite stores in the city!).
This years theme was a foodie holiday. Hilarious caricatures of everyone's favorite foodie hosts participated: from Martha Stewart and Rachel Ray (grimacing from a clock!) to Paula Deen with her pockets filled with sticks of butter (I loved that one!).
Mario Batali was unceremoniously stuffed like a pig on the dinner table in one window while a glamorous evening gown reminicent of Grace Kelly in the masked ball of To catch a Thief was created from Illy coffee bags in an adjacent display.
Nothing beats New York for getting one into the holiday spirit (and spending more money than you mean to!). What do you do to get into the holiday spirit?

ReplyDeleteWhat a riot! I am a foodie and nothing says "holidays" like great food! I love the smell of hot apple cider warming on the stove while Christmas carols are playing.

ReplyDeleteOh wow, I can't stand little Simon Doonan, but these displays are fabulous. Poor Mario. NY is great for the holiday spirit (and I'm going to see the Magic Flute at the Met which is very much a tradition for my family), but for me nothing marks the start of the xmas season better than that first mug of mulled wine.

ReplyDeleteHow fun was that? Although I can help but wonder how MB feels about his portrayal...kinda creepy! The sticks of butter are too funny because the few times I've caught PD's show, she always talks about butter!
ReplyDeleteWhat a hoot! You've allowed me a vicarious trip into the city and I've enjoyed it immensely. Sounds strange, but I enjoy getting my shopping done early, then watching other shoppers hustle and bustle!

quintessence - Bergdorfs were very lovely and incredibly intricate, but didn't have this same creativity I felt. No one beats Simon!
Acanthus - I hope all of the people featured have a good sense of humor because none of them are especially flattering! MAYBE marthas....
Mark - I've been done with my shopping for awhile, I was out and about shopping for myself and checking out the windows!
Eric - thats for sure....notice none of those people depicted are very thin ;-)
Nobody looks good in what appear to be SNUGGIES? I'm curious to know why that choice. Sure those windows must be cold in the winter (do paper mache people get cold?) but it's not like that's a product they would sell at BNY in a million years.
