storage with style

I'm loving this image from the kitchen of Safia Bendali, as captured by Marie-Pierre Morel for the Oct. 2009 issue of Elle Decoration. Her collection of beautiful china (i spy wedgwood jasperware!) is elegantly housed alongside of cookbooks in a practical but beautiful storage application. If I could only have shelves like that! The table from Astier de Villatte is unusual and I'm not sure what I feel about it -what do you think? Too bulky or just right? I can't help but think it looks like a flat topped pool table!

  1. I like the chunky-ness of the table against the finer lines of the shelving. I would want a different chair however, the two together are too dark and heavy for me.

  2. The photo makes me smile. The table it DIVINE! I love it and have wanted to do one like this for a client for YEARS! The whole back wall with storage of beautiful dishes and books. LOVE!
Is the trim on the seagrass purple? If it is- I love that custom extra special detail.

  3. A dear friend has cabinets orignal to the home with glass fronts, and all the china and glassware are visual, I love it. The table is unique!

  5. The suitability of the table depends on the size of the room - which I cannot judge from the photo. As to liking the table: what I don't like is what appears to be a black paint finish - I'm not a lover of black in quantity - and had it been my kitchen I would have left the original finish and added marble as a top. I really do like the storage, which is what your post is about. Very high style room!

  6. I like the table, or the chairs, but not both. Together their a little too "Tudor style" looking for lack of a better description. I LOVE the storage! It reminds me of Gosford Park in a more practical application : )

  7. I think it does look like a converted pool table but its fine -- what I have my beady little eyes on is that huge Wedgwood cheese plate and dome! Wow!

  9. Cabinets are so good looking and like Alice the monogram at the base to cover possible clutter or less than things is genius. The mix of books and crockery is real. As to the table-it seems to fit the overall impression that Bendali is on her own in the best possible way-individual style. GT

  12. A set of glazed shelves like that is just the ticket for the kitchen. Otherwise it's a regular spring-cleaning job unless you want the Quentin Crisp look. 'After four years, the dust doesn't get any thicker'. .

  14. Well, yeah the table kinds of look a bit awkward to me too. However it does indeed complement the storage shelve cabinet, does it not? Their colours combo does match nicely with each other and makes it as though they were purchased from the exact same store. I personally would not consider such a shelve cabinet though, because I find that it will actually cause me to create clutters instead of helping me to organize my things. This is due to the fact that the doors are made of glass, thus not concealing the stuff that I place inside.
