Paris Opera House

One of the things I hope to see while in Paris next week is the Paris opera house by Charles Garnier -especially the ceiling by Chagall (one of my favorite artists!). This sketch by Raoul Dufy depicts the opera house in 1924, long before Chagall started the ceiling - can't you see the similarities? How did he know what was coming?!The Dufy sketch is part of the Phillips Collection here in DC.

  2. It is one of the most impressive places in Paris to visit, which it was meant to be, of course, but it is stunning. Imagine women with bare shoulders, plunging decollete, clouds of perfume, men in black and all seen by candlelight rather than the electricity that is there now. Whilst you are waiting to go in look upwards at what appear to be not yet complete restorations - blocks of uncarved stone. They are unfinished blocks from the time of the building, and I think there is a connection with Les Miserables here. Check it out.

  3. This is beautiful! It looks like a place here in Memphis (yes, Memphis, TN) called the Orpheum Theatre. It is beautiful inside. Many broadway shows play there, as well as a number of other things/artists. I was lucky enough to have my rehearsal dinner on stage there - which was amazing!

Buildings like this are simply breathtaking!

  9. You are going to have such a marvellous time, seeing all these beautiful things. Last Fall we went for two weeks and I was utterly saturated. I could not stand to see another beautiful thing. I only wanted to see ugly things when I came home. haha. Just kidding. It is heaven overload. As an architect, I am sure it will be truly information overload as you will appreciate all the exquisite details and references and context.

    Have a ball! Terri xo

  11. Have a wonderful time and you must go inside and please note the mozaic floors - they are a work of art too. So much to look at in every corner of that place!

  12. I bought a small 11 x 16 print at a bookstore art sale here in L.A taken from a book Chagall made for the studies of the opera house ceiling-I paid 60 bucks for it...years and years ago- but it hangs neatly and is my slice of the opera house revealing it's unrepentant joy.

Enjoy!! Have fun- I will look forward to your post!
