A little supper

This past Thursday I had some friends over for a little supper. Nothing fancy, just a little pasta and salad after work. I set the table the night before.I know you're not supposed to put flowers with a lot of fragrance on the dinner table, but I couldn't resist these pretty peonies!Easy as 1, 2,3 -I think it turned out ok. Beats pizza at the coffee table!

    Sadly the peonies lasted about 4 days before just wilting and loosing all of their petals -i used the flower food and changed the water daily -any tips from anyone?

    Scott, I bought the flatware as my 'everyday' years ago at crate and barrel -they still carry it! Made by Hamilton I think...really heavy and still looks new after 7 years (and numerous roomates!).

    YSL, thanks! I've posted it before, the salad plate is from my set of 'cuckoo' by Wedgwood and the entree plate is vintage by Minton.

  8. Stefan-Truly lovely. You should own A Passion for Flowers by Caroylne Roehm. When you are cutting them from the garden you scrape and split the stem and plunge them in hot water. In Thomas Circle, I don't think you cut them from the garden. The ones you bought were probably held too long and/or not conditioned properly. Not your fault. I'm sure it was a lovely 4 days though!

  9. Beth, I briefly read the book, at the library! your favorite place!! I had bought them at whole foods, I'm sure they had sat there for a week before I bought them. Hot water, good to know -i used cold! I did split and scrape the stems at least.

  11. Okay, I just referenced my flower bible, "The Flowers of La Grenouille" which says "rush water to blossoms by putting in a little bit of hot water, then in one pint water w/3T sugar. Keep in a cool place at all times; peonies wilt quickly in heat." Hope this helps for future arrangements of my fav flower!

    ps...they still looked beautiful on Saturday!

  12. Allie, thanks so much! sugar -would never have thought of that! Somehow it was immediate on Sunday -they just wilted within an hour -so odd. I guess they knew to survive through Saturdays events!

  20. The Wedgewood Cuckoo salad plate looks electric on top of the vintage Minton; better - I think - that it would on top of another Cuckoo! Great taste!
