Inspired by Blass

The Sept 2008 issue of Veranda has the apartment of Bill Blass's former employee (model then design director), Laura Montalban, who seemed to have learned a thing or two from the master, Blass. Namely - impeccable taste! The apartment screams refined elegance in the form of restraint and a collection of beautiful but edited pieces.
I love the white mouldings against the gray walls and the dark brown carpeting. The walls supposedly are a different shade of gray in each room which seems a bit over the top, but you can't deny the beautiful results. She opted for carpeting here instead of wood as the floors were in bad shape and I think it works. It definitely feels cozy due to the carpeting. The only thing I would change is to get rid of the leopard print fabrics ( i know it's supposedly stylish but it's just not my thing!) and maybe opt for more architecturally shaped upholstered pieces in the living room. I don't mind a little bit of mirrored wall as this is probably a dark and small space in the city, but the wall of mirror behind the secretary is over-kill. The bedroom has soft color with the green fern prints on the wall and the green swan vase as well as the beautiful carpet and bedspread. What a relaxing retreat in the city!!!

  1. Couldn't agree with you more! I think we share a very similar affection for symmetry too.

  2. SO graceful and relaxing. I think I need a piece of Biedermeier.

  3. And she's the daughter of Ricardo Montalban and a niece of Loretta Young. Which only adds to the glamour.

  4. Right as always, AAL! I think it would be appropriate to have one or two small discrete B&W framed photos of them just to 'show off' a bit!

  5. I'll be brave and say I like the leopard :) I think it adds punch. Great post.

  6. SC, I agree with you when you say that you like the punch it adds to the room -it definitely needs that. I'm just never a fan of animal prints.

  7. With Biedermeier in any room the work is nearly complete. Beautifully done. Tasteful..the perfect amount of editing! And..if anyone needs their own little slice of Biedermeier heaven, I have a sofa that will not work in my new 1927 Spanish Colonial. It is up for grabs. I think it would be perfect in Laura's living room!!!
