This house was designed as a home for college founder Matthew Vassar for Springside, his estate at Poughkeepsie, NY. Vassar worked on the landscaping for years but never actually built the house Vaux designed, preferring to continue living in a gardener's cottage. I think this must have been the inspiration for the Gothic villa in the blog post.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c8/Springside_planned_main_house.jpgAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28651976363618994.post-77255879544129002342018-10-03T17:55:56.028-04:002018-10-03T17:55:56.028-04:00This house is gorgeous, and i love that it looks a...This house is gorgeous, and i love that it looks and feels lived in. What is also really touching is that the parents obviously encourage their sons interests - it takes a loving parent to turn a room into a natural history museum!!Annhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17991085128131515835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28651976363618994.post-89968994323136375832015-04-23T07:20:50.192-04:002015-04-23T07:20:50.192-04:00It's a funny sort of amalgam, "Colonial G...It's a funny sort of amalgam, "Colonial Gothic".
