Snowday 2

Our very un-southern like weather continues here in DC. I was one of the (very) few who trudged into work today. Franklin square at 8am above.Once I reached a 1/2 way point to Georgetown, there was no turning back! I saw the blizzard progress from flurries into 40 mph winds. Talk about exciting!Remember my post on the interiors of the condos at 2501 Pennsylvania Avenue, things have changed! See above
It's not so much that much fresh snow is falling, but the high winds are tearing down the stacks of plowed snow and covering everything. Above you can see one of many downed trees around the city, this one on Washington Circle.
Streets were deserted at rush hour, as you can see. I passed a few brave souls walking, but no cars!
Above you see the much beloved Blues Alley - they'll be closed tonight!
I think I'll be calling it an early day and head back home!
Hope you are all safe and warm!
All images taken between 8 & 8:30 am on Wed. Feb. 10 before the blizzard really hit.

Great pictures! I almost feel like I'm there.

Here in Memphis there's a little snow remaining but the streets are clear. Keep warm.:)

Wow, that's pretty impressive.

hmmm, and here we are, in Eastern Maine, with below average snowfall, and none predicted for the coming week. Not that I'm complaining...and right now knocking on wood.

That first photo is a stunner. It must be hell on earth but it all looks fabulous. I drove along the freeway to work this morning in a light sprinkle of fine powder - what we call snow in Georgia.

Glad to hear you are well. What a mess! Gives illustration to Kennedy's words that Washington was a city of southern efficiency and northern charm. Hate to think of the tree/plant devastation that will be made known later on.

Well, we just topped 10 inches, making it the snowiest winter EVER in Washington. Gorgeous photos AD!

I can only imagine how thankful your employer must be that you showed up for work. Your photos are glorious, they remind me of France.
I hope you are home, safe and warm.

What a snow you all are having -- and it's not like the NE or Canada or Minnesota where you expect it!

Wow! It never snowed like that when I lived in DC. Wish it had though. Atlanta is a bore in terms of snow...

Well, I didn't lose power (and thus, heat!) yesterday, so that was great. But this morning, I woke up to an enormous fallen hemlock. It's a shame, because despite the destruction, it's never looked prettier outside! Lauren

We're so glad the snow-icane didn't wipe you away completely!

Do we need to airlift shovels? So glad people are not being hurt, but can't help but think about the landscape that will take generations to replace. Be safe and don't laugh, watch out for falling ice. I doubt southern buildings have ice guards on rooflines.

Scott of the Antarctic would have been proud of you, Stefan.

When you're trapped in Arlington, it's nice to see the downtown views! Thanks for the pics. I think we might be ready to venture out today.

1) OH my goodness, that is a lot of snow. 2) Hmmm, do you have a favorite house or gallery I might visit in DC? Spot to eat? Thank you so much! 3) Whoa. Your apartment is amazing. How did I miss this on AT? Salon wall HEAVEN. 4)I must know more about the estate/landscape drawing. I have a post planned about them and am looking for one for my bedroom. I'm crazy for planned gardens.

Virginia -what area are you staying in for recommendations on restaurants. Dupont again? Darlington House is great -1610 20th street at connecticut avenue.

You must see Marjorie Post's mansion- Hillwood. Also - the Anderson House in Dupont circle (society of the Cincinnati) at 2118 massachusetts avenue.

The national portrait gallery is really great and new since you were last here I think - 800 F street NW - it's surrounded by great restaurants as well.

I am amazed that you made it to work! I walked Connor at 9-ish and it was fine, but when we went out an hour or so later, it was horrible! Soooo windy that the blowing snow hurt! I made it out yesterday afternoon, just to get out! At work today, but few others are.

Thank you, Stefan! I will be staying at the Liaison Capitol Hill Hotel, so near the Capitol? Thank you for the recommendations!

Wow, what an amazing set of pictures. I envy you in a way. We never get terribly cold weather here, so we never get to wear glamorous coats, scarves and other accessories (not that you would go out in a blizzard! David :-)
